Smoot PhotoArthur O. Smoot, Sr., 94, of Flint Hill, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2016, in his home.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 14, at 1:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Sammy Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the Washington Masonic Cemetery.

Mr. Smoot was born on March 21, 1921 in Washington, Virginia, son of the late Thomas B. Smoot and Etta French Smoot. He was married on August 8, 1939 to Goldie Anna Smoot. She passed away on May 22, 1999 after 59 years of marriage.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family of four sisters and eight brothers.

Mr. Smoot was a U. S. Air Force veteran having served during WWII. He worked for many years until his retirement from Avtex Fibers, Inc. Mr. Smoot remained active throughout his life. He loved his family, friends, and the outdoors. His proudest project was when, at the age of 80, he decided to start a Christmas tree farm which he planted and maintained for 15 years.

Surviving are his four children who will cherish their wonderful memories of him, three sons Arthur O. Smoot, Jr. and wife Faye of Front Royal, William F. Smoot of Culpeper and Gary Smoot and wife lana of Fredericksburg; one daughter Elizabeth Ann Bywaters and husband Buddy of Flint Hill; eight grandchildren that he loved dearly, Jim Bywaters, Dasha Sealock, Scott Smoot, Lisa Smoot, Debbie Sisk, Krystal Smoot, Brandon Smoot, and Taylor Moore; three great-grandchildren Ashley Smoot, Anthony Smoot, and Ali Smoot, as well as a large extended family of relatives and friends that have fond memories of him.

Mr. Smoot was preceded in death by his beloved son Bobby Lee Smoot; grandson Christopher Lee Smoot; and daughter-in-law Frances Smoot.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Smoot, Gary Smoot, Scott Smoot, Sam Foreback, Charles Sutphin and Dale Welch.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce Vierling, Donald Beahm, William Smoot, and Stevie Sealock.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 13, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
