Douglas Clay Stamey, Sr., 82, of Front Royal, VA, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at his home on Monday, September 25, 2017 in Front Royal, VA.
Doug was born August 19, 1935 in Emert’s Cove near Gatlinburg, TN, son of the late Carey Francis Stamey and Minnie Pearl Gravely Stamey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers; Jesse Stamey, Ray Stamey, Roy Stamey, Gene Stamey, Jimmie Stamey, and Ralph Stamey.
Doug (or Clay as he was known by many) was a U. S. Air Force veteran and retired from the Army Corps of Engineers as Chief of Reprographics. He started every day with the Northern Virginia Daily Crytoquip and Crossword puzzles and he ended every day with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. He was a passionate nature lover who enjoyed taking care of birds and flowers in his backyard sanctuary. He was an avid hiker who was frequently found on the Dickie Ridge trail or any of the many trails in the Shenandoah National Park. His love of sports knew no boundaries, especially for the Redskins, the Tennessee Volunteers, and the Washington Nationals. Country music highlighted the soundtrack of Doug’s life, especially; Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash.
Surviving are his wife Carolyn Sue McDonald Stamey of Front Royal; four children Douglas Clay Stamey, Jr. (Sandra), Karen Stamey Farrell (Steve), Jacqueline Broy Cochran (Martin), and Andrea Stamey Lewis (Will); one brother Leonard Stamey (Margaret); twin sister Dorothy Mae Owenby; and eight grandchildren; Kaitlin Farrell, Patrick Farrell, Maegan Muse, Tayler Dye (Chase), Trey Stamey, Carter Cochran, Kiersten Cochran, and Easton Lewis.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 21, from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Front Royal County Club.
