Douglas Cleveland Leckie

LeckieDouglas Cleveland Leckie, 91, of Front Royal passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2015, in the Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Front Royal conducted by The Rev. Robert Jones. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Leckie was born September 14, 1923 in Roanoke, Virginia, son of Maynard and Elizabeth Barbiers Leckie.

He was a graduate of Randolph Macon College with a degree in sociology. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, now VA TECH, for one year then Madison College where he received his teaching certification. He taught 8th grade english and history at Warren County Public Schools for three years and in Roanoke for one year.

He served in the U. S. Army during WWII. He received the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with Bronze Arrowhead, the Distinguished Unit Badge with two clusters and the Croix De Guerre. He served in Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe.

Mr. Leckie was an insurance agent for Life of Virginia from 1962 to 1984. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir, served on various committees, attended bible study, and videotaped the church services and delivered them to shut-ins.

He was a very active member of the community being a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, C-CAP, Anti-litter Council, and longtime member of the Salvation Army Board. He was a past member of the Front Royal Lions Club. He very much enjoyed playing trumpet in the Community Band for many years.

Surviving are his wife Elizabeth “Betty” Belle Maddox Leckie; a son Charles Maynard Leckie of Stephens City and his wife Tereasa; a daughter Christina Leckie-Smith of Rappahannock County and her husband Jerry; and two grandchildren Madison Leckie, age 17, and Michael Leckie, age 14.

Pallbearers will be Junior Griffeth, Jerry Smith, Jim Lindquist, Evine Erikson, Michael Leckie, Dale Cox, and Tim Grant.

Honorary pallbearers will be Maggie Lesher, Anna Finn, Olivia Will, Cindy Cox, David Finn, Susan Parker, Brian Okland, and Kathy Peters.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, P. O. Drawer 1109, Front Royal, VA 22630.
