James E. “Gabby” Hayes

James E. Hayes, Sr. photoJames E. “Gabby” Hayes, Sr., of Warren County, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2015 in his home.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 7, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Byron Hutchings officiating. Interment will be private in Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria.

Gabby was born on July 5, 1934 in Kenova, West Virginia son of the late Millard Lonzo Hayes and Virginia Mae Atkinson Hayes. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. Gabby was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, member of the VFW Post 1860, the Giles B. Cook Post 53 of the American Legion, and the Front Royal Moose Lodge #829. Gabby worked in his earlier years for AB&W Bus Lines in Alexandria and retired after many years with William E. Hazel. He was married to the late Agnes Louise Spinks Hayes.

Surviving are six children James E. Hayes, Jr. and wife Patricia of Old Town, FL, Terry L. Hayes of Front Royal, George D. Hayes and wife Pamela of Winchester, Craig A. Hayes and wife Shelley of Front Royal, Jeffrey L. Hayes and wife Lori of Front Royal and Mark W. Hayes and wife Rosemary of Front Royal; two brothers Tommy Hayes and wife Gracie of ME, and Bill Hayes and wife Donna of NC; one sister Virginia Hall and husband Richard of New Mexico; sixteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons James E. Hayes, III, Robert L. Morrison, III, Kevin W. Hayes, George D. Hayes, Jr., Arnold M. Williams, III, Joshua A. Hayes, Corey A. Hayes, Codey A. Hayes, Michael W. Hayes, and Matthew W. Hayes.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren Krystyne F. Hayes, Kathryn L. Hayes, Kyryn A. Hayes, Olivia G. Hayes, Robbie Hood, and Richie Hood.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Oct.6 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.

In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Humanitarian Fund.
