James Fletcher Massie, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at his home. He was born at Hamden Hall, Washington, Virginia on June 5, 1930. He was born to Wade Hampton Massie, Jr. and Ada Mae Miller. Mr. Massie was predeceased by his loving wife, Beverley Deane Ribble Massie. He was also predeceased by a sister, Jacqueline Massie Eastham and a brother, Wade Hampton Massie, III. Jim graduated from Washington High School in 1949 and attended the University of Virginia. He spent two years in the U.S. Army in Fort Hood, Texas. He returned to Rappahannock County in 1957 and lived at Meadow Grove Farm, Amissville, Virginia where he had a commercial beef cattle operation. Jim served on the Culpeper Soil and Conservation Board, and was a director for the Culpeper Farmer’s Cooperative Board. He served on the Rappahannock Zoning Board and was Secretary of the Electoral Board of Rappahannock County. Jim was also a deacon at the Flint Hill Baptist Church. In his early years he enjoyed fox hunting with Rappahannock Hunt. He loved to entertain and friends enjoyed his stories and knowledge of Rappahannock County history. Jim also enjoyed country, gospel, and bluegrass music. He is survived by his son, James Fletcher Massie, Jr. and his wife, Deborah Furmage Massie of Meadow Grove Farm, Amissville, Virginia and his daughter, Sarah Hampton Massie Cheatwood and her husband John Marshall Cheatwood of Warrenton, Virginia. He is also survived by four grandchildren, David Hamilton Massie and his wife Kristi Wellington Massie, Caroline Meade Thatcher Massie, John Marshall Massie Cheatwood, and Brooke Roberts Massie Cheatwood. Other survivors include a brother, Thomas Benjamin Massie and his wife Aney of Washington, Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be graveside at Meadow Grove Farm on Saturday, July 18 at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Jim Payne. Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal is in charge of arrangements.
