Mrs. Martha “Marty” Hayes (née Larson), of Front Royal, died peacefully on December 2, at the age of 76.
Marty is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deirdre and Kevin Sparger and grandchildren, Katherine and Rita Sparger, all of Front Royal Virginia; as well as her brother and sister-in-law, David and Judie Larson of Boyertown, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by a loving extended family of in-laws and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edward Daniel Hayes.
Marty was born on August 2, 1939 in Rankin, PA to Dorothy and Rudolph Larson.
Marty worked for 40 years as a Registered Nurse. Beginning her career in mental health nursing and ending in nursing home administration, Marty had a particular passion for caring for and advocating for the most vulnerable populations of patients.
After the death of her husband, Marty moved to Front Royal, Virginia, where she started a new career as a Tourism Consultant at the Front Royal Visitor’s Center. Marty loved meeting new people, her co-workers and the opportunity to explore a new field.
Marty was funny, feisty, smart and compassionate. She loved to travel, to garden, and to spend time with her loved ones.
Generous and energetic, Marty was instrumental in founding the Claremont Regional Library, starting the Backpack Program at Front Royal Presbyterian Church and often volunteered at Community Table in Front Royal.
A funeral is scheduled for 3 PM, Monday, December 7 at Front Royal Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. Dr. C Thomas Rhyne will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Marty’s life.
In remembrance of Marty Hayes, those who wish may make contributions to the Outreach Fund of Front Royal Presbyterian Church or to Blue Ridge Hospice.
