Known to most as Mrs. Butler if you came in through the front door and “GG” if you came in through the back door, Mary was known for her sharp wit and humor, giving out advice you didn’t ask for but always needed, feeding you whether you were hungry or not, and making the best iced tea this side of the Blue Ridge.
Mary was born in Boyce, VA on October 15th, 1930, to Braxton and Ollie Reid. She married Norman Butler Sr. on July 11th, 1948. She worked as a housekeeper and caregiver in Warren and Clarke county for over 40 years, along with taking care of her children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and all the other people she adopted as soon as they walked in the door.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Norman Butler Sr. along with her sisters Francis “Pete” Carroll and Edna Bunting. She is survived by her sister Betty Stevenson; half-brother Brad Reid; three children; Linda Mann, Norman “Ted E” Butler Jr., and Kelly Stevens; two grandchildren, George Reid Collins and Mary Christopher; one great-granddaughter, Anna Christopher; and her two grand-cats, Boomer and Colonel Sanders, whom she liked to complain about but secretly snuck extra food when her daughter wasn’t home.
The family will receive those who wish to join in a celebration of Mary’s life at Maddox Funeral Home on Saturday, August 11th, 2018 from 1 to 3 PM. Memorial gifts may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, #405, Winchester, VA 22601.
