Mary King Miller

Mary King Miller passed away at Hidden Springs on September 7, 2018. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 5, 1922 to Marion Burden and Barbara Henderson King. Moving to Birmingham, AL when she was three, she attended school and business college there. She moved to Charleston, South Carolina during the Second World War where she worked for a construction company and volunteered as a nurse’s aid. It was there that she married William (Weedy) Redus Miller in 1942. As a newlywed, she followed her husband as the Navy sent him to New York, Boston, and California, crossing the country alone several times to meet him when his ship was in port.

After the War, Mary and Weedy lived in Miami, Tampa, Atlanta and Birmingham, finally moving to Falls Church, VA in 1958 where Weedy began his career with the FAA. By then they had three children, Bill, Ronnie and Christy. When they were teenagers, Mary began working for Dr. Nelson Podolnik, volunteering in the labor and delivery department at Arlington Hospital and playing violin in a community orchestra. Mary was a lifelong Presbyterian, active in churches wherever she lived, and always singing in the choir.

In 1976, Mary and Weedy retired to Shenandoah Farms in Front Royal, VA where they built a log home. Eager to contribute to their new community, Mary and Weedy became EMTs with the Shenandoah Farms Fire Department. They spent a large part of their retirement years traveling in their AirStream trailer, going from coast to coast and from Alaska to Guatemala, Nova Scotia to Key West and visiting friends and family along the way. In 2007, they moved to Hidden Springs Senior Living, where she lived for nine years after Weedy died, charming and supporting friends and the staff (who became her friends) there.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers, John Julius King and James Henderson King, and her beloved Weedy. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Bill and Marion Miller of Bend, OR, Ron and Nell Miller of Bentonville, VA and Barry and Christy Barton of Bealeton, VA; her eight grandchildren and their spouses: Erin and JB Miller (Bend, OR) Carrie Miller and Chris Taylor (Lake Hawea, New Zealand), Jenny and Zach Brown (Portland, OR), Adam Miller and Sarah Schlein (Huntington, VT) Brian and Julie Miller (Houston, TX),LeeAnn and Doug Bynaker (Bealeton, VA) Kenny and Shawna Barton (Bealeton, VA) and Christopher and Chrissi Barton (Bealeton, VA) and her 12 great grandchildren

Her positive outlook, sense of adventure, willingness to always see the best in people, ready laugh, fierce loyalty (to family and the Redskins) love of family and constant gratitude have provided lessons shared with many and will be missed by all who have known her.

A funeral service will be held at Front Royal Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 11 AM with burial to follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please remember Mary with a contribution to the music program at Front Royal Presbyterian Church or CNA Scholarship Program at Lord Fairfax Community College.
