Rev. John Doward Lyerly, 78, of Front Royal, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in the Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Stanley officiating.
Rev. Lyerly was born on July 20, 1938, in Rockingham, North Carolina, son of the late Rev. Joseph Edward Lyerly and Edith Mae Fulton Lyerly. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army having served during Vietnam, retired after nearly 30 years with the Warren County Sheriff’s Department as a Lieutenant of Criminal Investigations and served as chaplain for many years with the Warren County Sheriff’s Department. Rev. Lyerly was a pastor for nearly 60 years; most recently was pastor of Prayer for All People in Middletown for 17 years. He will be missed by his loving family and many friends.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 38 years Lynn Diane Green Lyerly; two sons Ryan Matthew Lyerly of Front Royal and John Lyerly of North Carolina; three daughters Stephanie Rae Lyerly Deese, Pamela Silek and Angela Lyerly Gibson all of Front Royal; one step-son Erin Hardy of Moorefield, West Virginia; two sisters Elizabeth Darby of Norfolk and Nell Lyerly of North Carolina; two brothers Joseph Lyerly of Rockinghan, North Carolina and Harry Lee Lyerly of Florida; 16 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
Rev. Lyerly was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 24 following the service until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
