Virgie Marie (Reil) Knox, 84, of Front Royal, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Chapel at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal.
Marie was born on February 20, 1932 in Riverton, Virginia, daughter of the late Robert Austin Reil and Alma Virginia (Williams) Reil.
Marie greatly enjoyed recounting her childhood experiences spent along the banks of the Shenandoah River with her younger siblings, Bobby, Tommy, Larry and Wanda. Marie was baptized at the Riverton United Methodist Church which she regarded as her spiritual home.
Following her graduation from Warren County High School in 1950, Marie married Gerald W. Knox. Marie enjoyed raising her children and she also worked in and co-owned Jerry’s TV Service in Front Royal. She later worked at Cooper’s IGA and at the CIA in Langley, Virginia. Following her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and also worked part-time at the Shenandoah Valley Country Club and the Front Royal Country Club, making many new friends and acquaintances. Marie was also a long time member of the Ladies Auxiliary at VFW Post 1860.
In addition to her parents, Marie was predeceased by her son, Michael William Knox; her brother, Robert “Bob” Reil and his wife, Lakie; and her longtime companion, Shirley William Durham, Sr.
Marie is survived by a daughter, Stacey Knox Athey and her husband Clay; a daughter in law, Donna Sealock Knox; four grandchildren, Emily Knox, Collin Knox, Clayton Athey and Madagan Athey; and three siblings, Tom Reil and his wife, Edie, Larry Reil, and Wanda Boyd.
