Rosalie Johnson Updike, 85, of Front Royal, Virginia, died in Largo, Maryland on Monday, February 19, 2024.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 10:30 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 120 West Main Street, Front Royal.  Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal.

She was born in Waynesburg, PA in 1938 to the late Alfred and Geraldine Johnson.  She was also preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Bernard Updike; daughter, Julie Updike; brother, Bill Johnson and sister, Barbara Johnson.  Rosalie attended Jefferson-Morgan High School in Jefferson, PA.  After high school, she moved to Washington, DC and worked at the Pentagon as a civilian employee.

She met her husband, Bernard “Bunny” Updike, while on the Pentagon duckpin bowling league and became a Navy wife.  Their military stations included Charleston, South Carolina and Naples, Italy among others.  She is survived by her five children, John (Dina), Anne, Robert, Tom (Suzanne) and Richard, and two grandchildren, Sam and Ben.

She worked for 25 years at the Royal Oak Bookshop in Front Royal, Virginia and was an avid reader who enjoyed rides in the country and music.

Rosalie was known for her sweetness and good cheer.  She was a wonderful mother to her children who will greatly miss her.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 26, 2024 from 5 to 7 PM at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street, Front Royal.
