Michael David Bates

April 7, 1969 – July 11, 2025

Michael David Bates, 56, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on July 11, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Texas on April 7, 1969, Michael’s life was a testament of love, family, and perseverance.

Michael proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and later worked in security, rising to the position of Vice President at Sentry Force Security. He brought joy to everyone around him. He was always cracking jokes, showing off his infamous dad dance moves, being goofy, and finding ways to make people laugh—even in the hardest moments.

Outside of work, Michael was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time outdoors, especially shooting, hunting, and fishing. But more than anything, he cherished his time with his family. Whether he was helping his grandkids look for Bigfoot or watching movies with his beloved wife Heather, he was happiest surrounded by the ones he loved.

Michael is survived by his wife, Heather Bates; his mother, Bette Williams, and her husband Jack Williams; his seven children: Alexander Meade, Amanda Bates, Elizabeth Carr, Sara Bates, Colton Bates, Hannah Bates, and Michaela Bates; and his four grandchildren: Ellie Carr, Jaxon Carr, Easten Harmon, and Marilyn Brunelle. He was deeply loved and will be missed more than words can express.

Michael’s legacy is one of strength, laughter, and unwavering love. He changed countless lives for the better, and the impact he made will live on through the people who knew and loved him dearest.

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” – Psalm 23:4

“The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example” – Benjamin Disraeli

“Lo there do I see my father. Lo there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers. Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever.” -Ibn Fadlan

Mike Bates!!!!!!!!!! You changed the question so I have to change my answer. You were an inspiration to many. You believed in me and my ability to be a great instructor and you certified me as one. I will miss the conversations and I will miss the range days with you. It’s rather surreal to walk into range 4 at Silver Eagle now. If i’m really quiet, I can still hear your voice barking commands on the course of fire. I’m still having a hard time believing you are no longer here. I told you from day one that I would always treat your family like they are my family and that has not and will never change. I am only a phone call away. Should Heather or the kids ever need me. The gold paved streets of heaven are even more protected now that you have arrived. I pray that God has welcomed you into His glory. You have fought a good fight. Well done soldier! Until the next time we meet. Semper Fi MARINE!!!! Ooooooorrrrrrrraaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

I JUST heard… I am sooo saddened by this news. I had lust left the NRA Range as the manager and so didn’t get the word.

Between Mike being from Texas, being a Marine, and us having shared blades a few times, he was in a truly top tier in my book. I called him The Viking to my team at the range, as he exuded a sense of fearlessness, exuberance, and simple commanding physical presence that I would expect from the leader of Vikings.

My world is smaller with out him… God Bless!!
