Keith Halder Schmitz Sr.

December 8, 1956 – October 23, 2026

Keith Halder Schmitz Sr., 69, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on October 23, 2026, at Winchester Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

Keith was born on December 8, 1956, in Bogalusa, Louisiana, to Lamar Halder Schmitz and Wanda V. Scott Schmitz. He attended Oakton High School in Oakton, Virginia. During his life, Keith also spent time living in California with his sister, Charmayne, a chapter of his life that added to the many experiences and memories he carried with him. He spent many years working as a grounds maintenance engineer at Fairfax Hospital.

Keith is survived by his loving companion and significant other of 50 years, Anita C. Tate; his children, Casiah Schmitz King (Earl), Bobby Schmitz, Chenoa Schmitz and Keith Schmitz (Heather); his mother, Wanda V. Scott Schmitz; and his sisters, Charmayne Schmitz (Julius) and Dawn Kotellos (Kevin).

He was a proud and loving grandfather to Eric, Andrew, Sade, Shyla, Mason, Lamar, Keith, Corynn, Adrian, Marcus, Jayden, and Romar. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Kairi, Marley, Miles, Reese, Leah, and Lincoln.

Keith is also survived by his nephew, Cameron Kotellos; niece, Marisa Kotellos; and great-nephew, Declan.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lamar Halder Schmitz, and his beloved granddaughter, Madison Danielle Schmitz.

Keith enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, especially playing his guitar, spending time outdoors, camping, and being surrounded by family. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart and brought him tremendous happiness.

Keith was a man who spoke his mind, believed in tough love, and wasn’t afraid to tell you exactly what he thought. But behind that straightforward personality was a generous heart and an open door. While raising his children, his home became a gathering place for countless friends, many of whom came to think of him as family and called him Big Keith. Some even lived under his roof when they needed a place to call home. He had a way of looking out for people while making sure they understood that his house came with his rules. He also had a sense of humor that those who knew him will never forget. Keith enjoyed sharing a beer and good company, but everyone knew that if you left your beer in his refrigerator, it just might become his. After all, as he would remind you, it was his house!

Through the years, Keith became much more than just a father to his own children. He was a familiar face, a source of tough love, and a lasting presence in the lives of so many who grew up around him. His home was filled with friendships, laughter, and memories that will be cherished for generations.

Keith leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, music, and love. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories of his family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

Keith lived life on his own terms, loved in his own way, and left behind more memories and friendships than he probably ever realized.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
