Melvin Maurice Gardiol

Melvin Maurice Gardiol, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Shenandoah Senior Living in Front Royal. Born on August 30, 1913, he would have been 103 years old on his becoming birthday.

A funeral service will be held at Maddox Funeral Home on Thursday, August 11, at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Samuel L. Campbell. Burial with military honors will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Gardiol was born in Baltimore, Maryland, son of the late Richard Joseph Gardiol, Jr. and Anna Belle Bower Gardiol. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years Ellen Ann Furry Gardiol.

Mr. Gardiol was a WWII U. S. Army veteran and served with the 515th Army Postal Unit in England and France during the war, attaining the rank of sergeant. Following the war, he was a mail carrier and later served for many years as a clerk for the Front Royal Post Office. He retired after 41 years of service with the U. S. Postal Service. Mr. Gardiol was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the Front Royal Fire Department.

Surviving are a daughter Melanie Gardiol Pello of Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, her husband Matt and two granddaughters Maura and Mariel Pello. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Pierre Gardiol and Richard J. Gardiol, III.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
