Wayne Lothrop Shipman, 87, of Front Royal, Virginia passed away on Monday, December 18, 2017 at Warren Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 22, 2017 at 11 AM at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main Street, Front Royal with Sammy Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Shipman was born on February 17, 1930 in Brockton, Massachusetts to the late William and Olive Lothrop Shipman. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Louise Underwood Shipman; son, Daniel Wayne Shipman; two daughters, Darin A. Waugh and Jana E. Williams and a sister, Bernice Hanson.
While enlisted in the Marines he also played football for the Philadelphia Eagles for one year. Later he transferred to the US Air Force where he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant and was a Purple Heart recipient during the Korean War. He then went on to work as an Analyst at the Pentagon until his second retirement. He was a member of American Legion Giles B. Cook Post 53 and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary. He served on the Police Chief’s Advisory Board, the Warren Memorial Hospital Advisory Board and Board of Directors, the Warren County Board of Zoning Appeals, was past president of Warren Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, was Vice President of the board for Front Royal Credit Union, was past president of Mountainside Villas Owners Association in Massanutten and served on the board of directors of both Mountainside Villas Owners Association and Massanutten Property Owners Association.
Survivors include his wife, Joan A. Shipman of Front Royal; three daughters, Carol Lee Brooke of Oxon Hill, Maryland, Nora C. Yacobi (Sean) of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina and Sara J. Ahren (Justen) of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts; three sons, Jeffrey T. Williams (Julianne) of Stephens City, Virginia, Gregory J. Williams (Diane) of Winchester, Virginia and Brett C. Williams (Nicole) of Stephens City; sister, Nancy Huerta (John) of Tucson, Arizona; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
