Thomas Edward Zinn II passed away peacefully on January 21, 2023 in Winchester, VA after a long battle with Merkel cell carcinoma. He was surrounded by friends and family.
Tom was born on December 8, 1960 at Lakehurst Naval Air Base in Lakehurst, New Jersey. He attended Warren County High School, where he excelled in football and tennis. Tom formed the garage band Stratus while in high school where he enjoyed playing drums and guitar with his best friend. During that time, he served his community and grew in his faith by participating in youth groups at Riverton United Methodist Church in Front Royal, and New Direction in Rappahannock County. After high school, Tom enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Zaragoza, Spain. While there, he made numerous lifelong friends, played drums at his local church (where he was known as “the barefoot drummer”), and became nearly fluent in Spanish. To fulfill his dream of becoming a pilot, Tom began taking flying lessons while serving overseas.
After his duty with the Air Force, Tom attended George Mason University, where he majored in Spanish and was active in the George Mason Christian Fellowship. Inspired to serve the Lord, Tom used his piloting skills for air ambulance missions work with Mission Aviation Fellowship, flying between villages throughout Central America. With his exceptional technology skills and his passion for communication, Tom connected regularly with friends and family in the States using ham radio.
To be closer to home, Tom moved his young family from the mission field back to the Fairfax, VA area where he worked for various companies as a technical writer and network engineer. While advancing in his IT career, Tom used his fluency in Spanish and his love of Latin culture to live and work in Panama. There, he helped create safer communities through the innovative technology startup ShotSpotter.
Returning to Northern Virginia, Tom secured a job with AT&T and became Lead Sales Systems Engineer. Although a talented network engineer, Tom’s true passion was aviation. Tom was a private flight instructor, taught flying at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, and was a Pilot Mentor for middle and high school students for the STEM Flights flying program in Winchester, VA. He was a man of endless hobbies, including motorcycling (he was a member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association), amateur radio, boating, camping, guitar, piano, and drums. Tom’s novel, The Big Ten, was published and released on Amazon only two days before his passing. He was a devoted Christian who loved Jesus and served others. He was an active member of Restoration Fellowship Church in Strasburg, VA.
Tom is survived by his mother Lynda Turner; sister Tanya Zinn Jones and husband Warren; wife of three years, Elma Aracely Martinez Zinn; nephew Jonathan Garland; nieces Christen and Kathryn Garland; stepbrothers Tildon Turner and wife Gioia, and Wayne Turner and wife Anne. Tom’s children from a previous marriage include daughters Katelyn Marie Zinn, Monica Zinn, Megan Zinn Rose (and her husband Brian), and son Kyle Zinn; Tom had one grandchild, Wallace Rose; Tom is predeceased by his father Thomas Edward Zinn and his daughter Katelyn Marie Zinn.
The family will receive visitors at Restoration Fellowship Church in Strasburg, VA on Sunday, January 29, between the hours of 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The funeral will be held at Restoration Fellowship Church on Monday, January 30, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM and service beginning at 11:00 AM. Internment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal.
The family encourages those interested to make donations to the STEM Flights program (stemflights.org) at Winchester Regional Airport, where Tom was active as a Pilot Mentor.

Tom was a very special, kind and joyful brother in Christ. I had the privilege to be the Assistant Pastor when Tom joined us at Calvary Chapel of Washington, DC.
His testimony of his love for Jesus Christ his Savior was clearly manifest through his life, words, and acts of Christian brotherhood.
I am saddened now, but when that Day comes, Tom and I will share an eternity worshipping our Lord Jesus Christ. Heaven is our home…and our brother is there in Christ’s Holy Presence.
My name is David Neil Dayton, a USAF Vet, who was stationed at Zaragoza Air Base, where I met Tom. My deepest felt sorry to his family for their great loss. In short, he was a great spiritual inspiration to me and a strong friend. See you in heaven Tom, my bro!
This is David Dayton and wife Nelida Millán, sending our condolences for the passing of Tom Zinn, who we met while I was stationed at the same time in Zaragoza, Spain. Tom was a great spiritual to us both, & he will br greatly missed.
Only met Tom once at KOKV. I had just returned from a solo cross country and had a near disastrous landing. As I taxied to the tie-down he approached me thinking I was someone else just in time for me to lament landing. Without missing a beat he encouraged me on the spot. Sink and pull, sink and pull. Never got a chance after that to express my thanks. I went on to get my PPL.
I had a few classes with Tom in high school and I never saw him without a smile and never knew him to say an unkind word. Although I never saw him after graduation, I remember him as one of the nicest guys I ever met. My deepest sympathies to his family. I know he is celebrating in heaven.
Tom was/is a remarkable man of God. Imagine what he is doing in heaven, especially when you consider all he did here on earth. Anytime in his presence I knew the Holy Spirit had joined us. His life can be described as an exclamation mark! He knew exactly how to live for the Lord. So very grateful to have known him as a friend. Our hearts go out to Aracely, Lynda, Tanya, and all of Tom’s family.
A truly wonderful man and Christian. He was so much fun in high school. He was always friendly and willing to help in any way he could. He will be missed.
Hey buddy, I’m lucky and privileged I got the honor to meet and hang out with you this last year. I’m so glad we got to be friends and was looking forward to deepening that. Thank you so much for taking the time to send me up in the air and teach me I can fly…and the meaning behind that.
I know where you are. I will be there too one day and hopefully, you can continue what you started with me.
Looking forward to it.
Your friend always and forever,
Jamie Bragg

I was truly sad to hear this news. All those who participated in New Direction were a blessing in my life, and Tom was an unforgettable character in that fellowship. I look forward to the day when we join Tom Zinn (as well another beloved NF member, Terry Nolan McHugh). I believe that they will be there waiting for us to join the heavenly feast. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this most difficult time.
I remember when Tom came into the AV-ED Flight School office looking to get back into flight instructing. I liked him from the start! Of course I hired him 🙂 It’s a blessing to have known Tom. He has given far more than he has taken away from this life. I look forward to seeing him again. I’m sure he will have all the answers to life’s mysteries. Like, Why do students say, “My instructor never told me/showed me that.” When clearly we have…a thousand plus times! Miss him.
Tom was a man who loved flying, and wanted others to experience the joys and love of flying as well. A fews years back, he and I had arranged a flight for my 7 year old daughter to go up and see Front Royal from the air so she could experience that joy. Unfortunately, she got cold feet, and did not want to go flying that day, so we never got to go, but that is the type of man Tom was to everyone he met. He will be missed.
Tom and I were best friends in high school. Though he lived many places, Riverton and Front Royal always remained close to his heart. Tom was a character! Later in life when I served Riverton UMC, we reconnected and Tom served as a drummer, singer, and other ways. Many prayers and much comfort for Lynda, Tanya, and all the family. Blue side up, Tom! A precious friend and family!
There are people we meet along this journey we call life and we are a better person for knowing them. Tom influenced me in so many ways and I am better person for knowing him. Thank you Chris for introducing me to this incredible man. Tom’s passion for Jesus was evident the day I met him. His infectious smile, love that had no end, a teacher who passionately showed others how to fly and he allows us to take in the wonders from the air.
Aracely- you and Tom opened your hearts and home to Tony and I and we love you so much! Sweet fellowship and genuine interest and care each time we were in your presence.
Unselfish- Tom you lived that even as you battled each day. I have been in Ohio since the end of November in jet training and you are sending me encouraging texts, voice memos and worshiping thru videos. Tony and I both had tears as we saw your love in action and prayers on my behalf as you fought for your life. Aracely, I will treasure the sweet times of worship and prayer we shared these last few months and the incredible bond of brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us help carry you in the days ahead as we celebrate Tom’s incredible life, mission and purpose here on earth.
Thank you Lord for ambassadors for Christ who show us how to live for you! Tom fulfilled that calling all around the world. Well done my friend! I miss you and the sweet presence of you in that airplane with me.
My deepest condolences to Tom’s family. I was so sad to hear of his passing. I had just mailed him a get well card 2 days before I heard the news. Tom and I went to school together. Several years ago we found we lived near each other as I lived in the Alexandria area, not far from him. He always had a smile and a kind word. May he be at peace and continue to fly among the clouds.
Tom you are loved by many and missed so much! To Lynda the kids and your wife I thank you for sharing Tom with us at Riverton while he was worship leader. Till we meet again dear friend! Tom is really flying high now!
