Best. Aunt. Ever.
Some of my earliest childhood memories are of Aunt “Winks” visiting her mother (my grandmother) and me at lunchtime. She was not fond of my first name and always called me “Boots.” At the time, she was working at a bank on Main Street and often brought me gifts of newly issued uncirculated coins. I spent many happy hours at her house playing with my cousin Craig. I always liked to think she saw me as the daughter she never had. She very much loved cardinals and since her passing, I’ve seen a cardinal out of my kitchen window a number of times which is unusual for this time of year (I rarely see them except during the winter when they are constantly at my bird feeders). This unseasonable visitor always brings a smile and sweet memories of my favorite Aunt Winks. May she rest in peace.
