Ann L. Shuman, 93, of Front Royal, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Heritage Hall Nursing Center, Front Royal.
Ann was born in Cambridge, MA on March 29, 1933, the first daughter of Harold F. and Rebecca M. Lindergreen. Soon after she was born, her parents moved from Beacon Hill into a house designed by her father in Needham, MA. She loved that house and always considered it her real home. She spent many of her summers waitressing on the Cape, with her family at Castle Hill and with family friends at Lake Chocorua in NH. She graduated from Needham High School and spent 2 years studying liberal arts at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She finished secretarial school at Kathryn Gibbs School in Boston and went to work as a secretary at an accounting firm shortly thereafter.
In 1949, she met R. Richard “Dick” Shuman, a cadet at VMI at the time. They married in1954 and had 3 children together during Dick’s active duty Air Force career. While a service wife, she volunteered at hospitals in a variety of roles, using her considerable organizational and interpersonal skills when she wasn’t managing their 3 rambunctious children and a menagerie of animals. She loved gardening, nature, hiking, camping, crewel needlework, travel, animals, eating fried clams in Ipswich, and had a real talent for flower arranging and interior design. She could make any place she landed a home. She showed her children love by baking cakes, cookies and brownies with walnuts.
She started working at Warren County Veterinary Clinic soon after Dick left the service and moved the family to Front Royal. She remained there as office manager until she retired in 1998. She and Dick divorced in 1983.
She is predeceased by her parents and her partner of many years, Rumsey M. Beery. She is survived by her two sisters, Sonja L. Jensen of Bermuda Run, NC and Linda L. Bloom of Wellesley, MA; her three children, Scott R. Shuman (Kim) of Lexington, NC, Lori S. Campbell (David) of Cary, NC, and Terry L. Shuman of Middle River, MD; two grandchildren, Nichole A. Shuman of Tacoma, WA and Matthew R. Shuman (Ashli) of Elkridge, MD and one great-grandchild, Robert D. Shuman, also of Eldridge, MD.
She will be buried in her hometown of Needham, MA. Donations may be made in her name to Dakota’s Dream in Winchester, VA, Blue Ridge Hospice, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or a charity of choice.

Lori, what a beautiful photo and what a beautiful lady! It sounds like she was a very accomplished woman who could do just about anything. I can see the resemblance in your smiles. All God’s blessings at this time for you and your family.
Condolences to my special friend Lori Campbel. I never knew your mother but she sounded like a multitalented and resilient lady. Peace to you Lori as you grieve the loss of your mother.
I will miss my Aunt Ann. She was a loving person, who I admired growing up. God bless her kids and my cousins, Lori, Terry, and Scott.
