Norman Ellwood Butler Sr., 87, of Milldale, VA died at home surrounded by his family on
December 28th, 2014. Norman was born on April 27th, 1927 in Clarke County to George D.
Butler and Mary Forsythe Butler. He was the youngest of seven siblings: Preston Butler,
Austin Butler, Sherwood Butler, Virginia Butler Berlein, Helen Butler Shifflett, and Lucille
Butler Lowman.
Norman worked at Riverton Lime and Stone, with 43 years of service as a heavy equipment
operator and certified blaster. After retiring, he focused on his farm and family. Norman was
an avid outdoorsman who could always be found hunting or fishing along the Shenandoah
River when the weather allowed. Rainy days would find Norman in his shop creating wooden
crafts or fishing nets, unless there was a John Wayne movie on.
Family will receive those who wish to join in a celebration of Norman’s life at Maddox Funeral
Home on December 31st, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm. A private burial will be held for family
and close friends as Norman lays to rest with his faithful dogs.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Mary Etta Reid Butler, his daughter Linda M.
Mann and husband Bobby, his son Norman “Ted” E. Butler, Jr. and wife Marlene, and his
daughter Kelly M. Stevens. He is also survived by two grandchildren, George “Reid” Collins
and Mary E. Christopher, one greatgranddaughter,
Anna L. Christopher, and several nieces
and nephews.
