Carole Jean Hiers Chapman

Carole Jean Hiers Chapman died from natural causes on December 29, 2020 at the age of 83. Carole is survived by her husband of 57 years, Paul Chapman, formerly of New York City, her two daughters, Amy Baird and Melissa Chapman, her son-in-law Edward Turner, and two grandchildren Ethan Fredrick Baird and Paul Clayton Chapman-Turner.

Carole was born January 17, 1937 in Brooks County, GA to the late Neely Tolar Hiers and John Robert Hiers. The last of 9 children, Carole spent her childhood in White Springs, FL and Lake City, FL where she was graduated from Lake City High School in 1955. In her early twenties, Carole worked for the telephone company in Florida. She soon moved to the Washington, DC area where she met Paul Chapman in 1961 at the Bradley Arms Boarding House on New Hampshire, AV in the heart of Dupont Circle. Carole worked for the National Rifle Association for 5 years, and Paul and Carole married September 20, 1963. They continued to live in Washington, DC., and later moved to Woodbridge and Falls Church, then settling to raise their children, Melissa and Amy, in Front Royal in 1972.

Carole was an avid reader of mysteries and history. She was a loyal fan of the show Jeopardy, and reigned unbeaten in Trivial Pursuit for many, many years. She never forgot her Southern roots, voted in every election, and loved her grandchildren very much.

Carole Hiers Chapman will be interred in Prospect Hill Cemetery on January 4, 2021 at 1:00pm. Please send cards and flowers to Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, VA.

    We know that words are inadequate at a time like this, but we wanted you to know how very sorry our family is for your loss. Melissa, Edward, Paul and the rest of Mrs. Chapman’s family will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.
