Frances Makin Van Doren, 91, of Front Royal, VA passed away peacefully on Monday, March 23, 2015 in her home surrounded by her loving family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 11:00 a.m. at the Front Royal United Methodist Church with the Rev Denise Bates officiating. Interment will be private.
Frances was born on January 15, 1924 in Upland, Indiana, eldest daughter of the late Thomas and Florence Makin. She was a member of the Front Royal United Methodist Church, volunteered her time making thousands of new born baby hats for Warren Memorial Hospital and also volunteered her time at her church working on items for their annual bazaar. Frances had been an accomplished bowler in the Front Royal Senior League and an avid square dancer in the Rivermont Ramblers Square Dance Club and the Plains Pomenaders Square Dance Club in Timberville. Frances and her husband David volunteered their time at local and national conventions. Frances had many cherished friends locally, within the square dance community and friends that she remained in contact with from her early years of military life with her first husband, Vic.
Surviving are her husband of sixteen years David Van Doren of Front Royal; four daughters Marilyn Himelick of Lewes, DE, Diane Himelick Hawthorne and husband Jim of Gaithersburg, MD, Vickie Himelick McElheney of Virginia Beach, and Pamela Himelick Fox and husband Jesse of Front Royal; two sisters Bernadine Dow and Phyllis Trost both of Cincinnati, OH; nine grandchildren Darryl Hawthorne of Urbana, MD, Joe Kelly of Bangor, ME, Chris Kelly of CO, Tom Amshey and Tracy Amshey Hamman both of Front Royal, Debbie McCown of Adamstown, MD, Kim Price, Kelly Hall and Carl McElheney all of Virginia Beach; twenty-three great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death with her parents; three brothers Donald Makin, Bobby Makin and Raymond Makin; two sisters Shirley Kuster and Beatrice Makin; one granddaughter Deidre Hawthorne Duke; and her husband of forty-seven years Captain Ronald Victor Himelick.
