Ida L Adkins photoIda Louise McClaugherty Adkins, 76, went home to be with her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, September 12, after a lengthy illness.

Louise was born on October 27, 1938, in Bozoo, WV, to the late Obie Drewey & Notie Belle Bonham McClaugherty.

Louise married and moved to Virginia with her husband, a pastor, in 1961, and made Rappahannock her permanent home in 1966. Here she raised her children and made her life in the beautiful countryside.

She had many opportunities to live in other locations before she retired from IBM in 1993, but she chose to remain in this community where she was able to continue her ministry with children through Children Services of VA, a foster care agency. Over a 49 year period, Louise’s compassion and generosity lead her to foster innumerable children, four of which remained with her.

She counted her blessings daily, demonstrating her benevolence through her avid support of varied churches, Christian organizations and ministries sharing God’s word and aiding those in need. Her recent favorites were Jerusalem Prayer Team, Wounded Warriors, & the Native American Heritage Association.

Louise is survived by her children, Barry Adkins (Nellie) Middletown, VA; Kevin Adkins & Aletha Craig (Greg) Front Royal, VA; Lavonne Adkins (Patrick Lee) & Benita Adkins, Washington, VA; and Roger Smoot, Florida. She is survived by a brother, Edward McClaugherty (Mabel), a sister, Blanche Blankenship (Harry) Bozoo, WV, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, & cousins she adored.

Louise leaves behind grandchildren, natural & extended; Devin (Cassie) & Chad (Brandy) Adkins, Thomas Lee III, Mallory Campbell (Levi), Cohen Adkins, Trevor, Tanyon, & Tymbor Lee, Michala & Matthew Craig, Alexander Adkins, Jonathan Smoot, Nyla Chunn, Mariah, Lakiyah, & Trenton Royal; and DeShaun, JaMaurio, Adrionna, & Nevaeh Jackson.

She also leaves behind great grandchildren: Aiden, Emilie, Kelly, & Rebecca Adkins, Levi & Cole Campbell, Adrianna Lee, and Edward & Layla Smoot. Other survivors include former husband, James W. Adkins of Front Royal, VA, and foster children Toya Burrell, Victoria Hart, James & Rhonda Jackson.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers, 1 sister, 4 nieces, 3 nephews, & 1 great grandson, Colton James Adkins.

A memorial service is set for Sunday, September 27, 2015, 2 PM, at the Washington Baptist Church, 180 Gay St., Washington, VA, 22747.

A second service is set in Louise’s hometown area for Saturday, October 3, 2015, 2 PM, at the Peterstown Christian Church, Rt. 12, Peterstown, WV 24963.
