James Arvin “Jim” Sullivan

He was the son of the late Emma Knight Sullivan Morris and James Ernest Sullivan. Arvin was born April 6th, 1933, in Dyke, VA and moved to Linden when he was 16 years old. He loved his mother Emma dearly. As a single mother and bread winner for the family, she was often away at work. During those times, he lived with very special uncles Harmon Knight, Walter Knight (Lillian), and Ivan Knight (Sylvia), and a very special aunt, Frankie Knight Shifflett, and their families. He considered many of his cousins to be like his brothers and sisters.

He married Dorothy Anna Atkins on August 28, 1954. They were married over 65 years before God called her home. Together they had three children, Carol Ann Sullivan Dodson (Frank), Diana Kay Sullivan (Roy), Susan Marie Sullivan Ralls (Joe), and four grandchildren, Rachel Ann Sullivan Dodson, Sara Beth Sullivan Dodson (Jacob), Jacob “Bud” Allen Sullivan Dodson, and Heather Marie Ralls who celebrate his life and entrance into God’s Kingdom.

He is also survived by his brother, Charles H. Morris, Jr., his nephew, Patrick Morris, and niece, Crystal Porter, of Front Royal.

Arvin truly enjoyed spending time with his family. Being a Dad and Grandpa meant the world to him.

He loved to travel and was always the first one ready for an adventure.

He had some very special friends from days gone by including Larry Clift, Hubert Nichols, Junior Strother, and J. W. Wine.

Arvin served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. He worked at Freezeland Orchards for over 14 years from 1948-1954 and from 1956 to 1960. From 1960 to 1978, he worked as a Carpenter in the construction trade in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C. Before retiring in 1995, he worked for Warren County Public Schools for 17 years as a Carpenter.

He joined the United Methodist Church in Linden in 1955 and transferred his membership to the Little Chapel Baptist Church in Linden in 1968 where he was a member for over 53 years.

He volunteered with the Rotary Club of Front Royal Habitat for Humanity home and with the JDRF Walk from 2002 to present.

Pallbearers will be Brad Fletcher, Frank Dodson, Roy Ugarte, Joe Ralls, Rachel Dodson, Sara Beth Dodson, Jacob Haynes, Jacob Dodson, and Heather Ralls. Honorary Pallbearers will be Pastor Herb & Nikki McLean, Gene Willingham, Michael Morris, Chuck Morris, and Patrick Morris.

The family would like to express their appreciation to all of the caregivers who have provided their love and support over the years.
