James William “Bill” “Gitz” Curl Jr., 78, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 14 at 3:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Williams and Sammy Campbell officiating. Inurnment will be private.
Bill was born May 11, 1948 in Front Royal, Virginia, son of the late James William Curl Sr. and Kathleen Moorman Curl.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve but his true passion was teaching and coaching sports for a span of over 50 years enjoying every minute of it. In 1960, coming from a small town of Front Royal, he and his team won the Little League State Championship in baseball. Bill was a longtime coach and teacher at Randolph Macon Academy and coached for Front Royal Little League for numerous years.
In his past time, you could always find him playing a round of golf or two with his friends and spending time with his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.
He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many students, teachers and friends.
Surviving is his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Joan McDaniel Curl; one son, Brad Curl and wife Tammy of Front Royal; one daughter, Julie Curl of Strasburg; three grandchildren, Reagan Evans and husband Tylor, Ryan Curl and Gavin Grove; three great-grandchildren, Huntleigh, Haylen and Jaxson; and brother-in-law, Joe McDaniel.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 14 from 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home.
