Janet Wiggins Pumphrey passed away peacefully in Front Royal, Virginia on November 3, 2015.
She was a beloved wife and mother, and she is remembered for her abundant grace, humor, and generosity.
Born in Danville in 1931, she was raised in Charlotte, NC and Arlington, VA. She graduated from Washington and Lee High School and Longwood College, where she was editor of the College newspaper. She taught elementary school for many years in both Arlington and Warren County.
Janet had a lifelong interest in the arts and reading, and she encouraged her family in their own creative pursuits. She founded and was active in her book club for many years. She loved nature and the out-of doors and enjoyed hiking and walks on the beach. Janet was a member of the Methodist Church, participating in congregations in Falls Church and Flint Hill, where she sang in the choir.
Janet is survived by her husband William Pumphrey of Rappahannock County, daughter Pam, son Michael and his wife Joanne, son David and his wife Laura, and grandchildren Michael and Catherine. She was preceded in death by her brothers William and James Wiggins.
A memorial service will be held at the Dulin Methodist Church in Falls Church, 1:00 pm, Saturday, November 21. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Nature Conservancy.
