Zunka, John James, 97, passed away on September 15, 2016. He is survived by his three children, John Walter Zunka (Peggy), Dr. Craig Anthony Zunka (Joellen McNeil), and Eva Tempril Zunka; his grandchildren Jennifer Z. Langley, James Craig Zunka, and John Page Purnell Zunka (Brooke); his great-grandchildren Lucie Langley and Olive Langley; his sister Barbara Flaherty. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie Buckner Zunka. John was born November 27, 1918 in Lowell, Massachusetts. He graduated from Bentley College in Boston, Massachusetts and served in the United States Army during WWII. His final duty station was at the Remount Station in Front Royal, Virginia. In 1946, he purchased Warren Paint and Supply Company which he owned for 61 years, retiring at age 88. He was an accomplished musician playing the clarinet and saxophone with local orchestras. A great thrill in his life was playing in the orchestra for Bing Crosby when Mr. Crosby came to Front Royal for the dedication of Bing Crosby Stadium. He was a member of the Front Royal Kiwanis Club for 68 years and served as its treasurer for 25 years and received the George Hixon Fellowship Award for exceptional service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Beautification of Front Royal, c/o 774 Old Belmont Road, Front Royal, VA 22630. The family will receive friends at Maddox Funeral Home Chapel, West Main Street, Front Royal from 5:00 to 7:00 on Saturday, September 24, 2016, and there will be a memorial service at Maddox Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the Front Royal United Methodist Church.
