Mr. Wertz is one of the greatest men, I’ve ever known. He and Ms. Carolyn took in a young college baseball player for multiple summers, and treated me like I was family. I was welcomed with open arms. Made me dinner every day before our games and took me to play golf every day as well with the guys. I was even there to witness one of his holes in one. I got to see him just last summer, so he could meet my wife and kids. What a wonderful time it was to spend with he and Ms. Carolyn. Years have certainly flown by since I was a Cardinal in Front Royal, but it sure holds a very special place in my heart. Memories that I will cherish forever there playing in that great city, and being paired with the greatest host family anyone could ever ask for. They kept up with me, even beyond my playing career, and it is special. Thank you Mr. John for being so great. And Ms. Carolyn, my family will be praying for you in the days ahead. Such a blessing to have gotten to know such wonderful people. Love you both very much!

    Mrs. Wertz,
Just wanted to send my sympathies. My mom (Hazel Burke Grove) graduated with your husband (and possibly you too?). I remember the two of you while growing up and interactions with my mom. Prayers for you and your family.

Hi, to all the family. Had been thinking about Johnny in recent days before hearing of his death. Gee…. What a wonderful fella!! Would have come for the service, but we’d planned a family gathering here in Hbg for a good while. Dick’s now in Health Care and can no longer travel. Hope to see you soon, Carolyn. Virginia Bethune
