Katherine Ann Hafferman

Katherine Ann Hafferman, affectionately known to family and friends as “Bird”, passed away on May 30, 2026 at the age of 72.

Born on February 2, 1954, Bird was a rare soul who was deeply funny, compassionate, and empathetic. She had a massive heart, with a special love and tenderness for animals and children. To Bird, friendship was paramount—she treasured her friends deeply and filled their lives with laughter and warmth.

Her life in Front Royal began in the summer of 1980, when she rolled into town with her lifelong friends, Moses Rodgers and John Bradshaw. She quickly became a local legend, working as the “new girl” with a firecracker personality behind the bar at the Hideaway alongside her beloved friends, Susan Rabold and Joy Hafferman (her sister-in-law), until the local favorite closed its doors in March of 1981.

In 1986, Bird welcomed the absolute love of her life, her son, Cody Louis. A brief chapter took her, Jon, and Cody to Florida in 1989, but Front Royal remained the home in her heart. She returned to town in 1999, where she truly found her second home and family at the Melting Pot. The Melting Pot was Bird’s favorite place to be. For 27 wonderful years, her customers served as the perfect audience for her vibrant, humorous, and full-of-life personality.

In 2020, Leslie Selland, her oldest and dearest friend of 55 years, came to live with Bird so they could spend the final chapter of their lives together. Sharing her life with those she loved meant everything to Bird, but nothing on this earth made her prouder or brought her more pure joy than being Cody’s mother.

Bird was preceded in death by her father, Martin Arthur Klein; her mother, Louisa Maria Figallo Klein; and her sister, Linda Louise Klein.

She leaves behind a legacy of fierce love and devotion. She is survived by her beloved son, Cody Louis Hafferman; and her cherished daughter-in-law, Ashley Mae Hafferman. Bird was the world’s proudest Me Maw to her grandchildren, Grayson Paul Hafferman, Graci Mae Lei Hafferman, and Gryffin Wade Hafferman.

She is also survived by Cody’s sister, Kaleigh Hafferman; her mother-in-law, Phyllis Hafferman; her former husband, Jon Hafferman, who always held a special place in her heart; Cindy Hafferman; and her dear friend and companion, James “Joey” Jardin.

A Celebration of Life will be held 4-6 p.m. on June 25, 2026 at the Melting Pot in Front Royal.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bird’s honor to either Bikers Against Child Abuse (bacaworld.org) or the Humane Society of Warren County (humanesocietywarrencounty.com).

Several good conversations throughout the years and she had the gift of being a people person. Her family and friends will surely miss her around. Keep those memories alive in your heart and mind. I forever cherish the last five years working with my favorite co worker and favorite Bartender. She always expressed her love for Robert Bachelor and dearly missed him as I did. We had daily “life” conversations that helped us both get through it. She definitely left many good memories that I will always cherish and never forget. Fly high Bird and give God, Robert, and Brian and hug for me!
    Love Randy “Nick” Lavelle.

You couldn’t be around Kathy without laughing! Regardless of how long it had been since we had last seen each other, we just picked up where we had left off. She so loved her many friends. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and Cody was the love of her life.

Rest in peace my dear dear friend.

Kathy you were a sweet and kind hearted friend that I’ve known since Jr. HS. I’m going to miss our Facebook messages, especially about animals and celebrating our birthdays together online even though we were 3 days apart. Rest in Peace and my deepest sympathy to Cody and all of your family and friends!
