Ollie Duane Smith, 79, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018 at Winchester Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Born in Vinton, Virginia on April 4, 1939, he was the son of Otis Smith and Madeline Pentecost Smith. His family moved to Front Royal in 1944, where they owned a local general store on 11th Street for many years.
Duane graduated from Warren County High School in 1957, and then joined the United States Navy as a Gunfire Control Technician, on the USS Furse, where he served until 1961.
After returning home to his family, Duane received his certification from Lord Fairfax Community College as a Waste Water Treatment Operator and worked for Avtex for 30 years. After Avtex closed , he continued his career at Upper Occoquan Service Authority (UOSA) in Centreville, where he met several close friends, until his retirement in 2010.
Duane had many hobbies and interests, including a love for sports. He played baseball as a young boy, continued playing throughout high school, and with the American Legion team after graduation. He was a huge fan of the Washington Nationals, Redskins, NASCAR and the Washington Capitals.
Duane loved country music and played his vast collection every chance he got. Some of his favorite artists included Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Hank Williams. He also had a great love of old western movies and was an avid reader of Louis L’amour.
Duane is survived by his wife, Jean Henry Smith of 60 years, a son, Ricky Smith, a daughter-in-law, Amy Smith, a daughter, Debbie and husband Lee Earl, a granddaughter, Jessica and husband Shawn Reynolds, a step grandson, Lee Earl, Jr. and partner Taylor Armstrong, two step great grandchildren, Hayden and Hudson, a niece, Gaile and husband John Ashbury, and his favorite little lap dog companion, Chipper.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Madeline Smith, parents-in-law, Jack and Eva Finnegan, three brothers, Earl, Bain and Otis, Jr., and a sister, Betty Smith.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 6 to 8 PM at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, 2018 at 2 PM also at Maddox.
Pallbearers for the service will be Lee Earl, Lee Earl, Jr., Shawn Reynolds, Mark Valdez, Kevin Valdez and Scott Valdez.
