Stewart E. Burke Sr, 92, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home in Warren County on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 3 at 12:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Sammy Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Panorama Memorial Gardens at Waterlick.

Mr. Burke was born April 1,1934 at home in Warren County, Virginia, son of the late Wilson Jackson Burke and Mary Whittebeck Burke.

He was a graduate of Warren County High School. After graduation he joined the United States Navy. Mr. Burke retired after many dedicated years from the Conservation Center in Front Royal. Following retirement, he dedicated many hours in helping Warren County Habitat for Humanity. He was a lifelong member of Rivermont Fire Department and a member of Bennett’s Chapel Church for over 70 years.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are two grandchildren, Bethany Shilan of Powhatan and Bryant Burke of Front Royal; two sisters, Clara Thompson of Front Royal and Anna Bell Baer of Warrenton; and a daughter-in-law, Kay Burke of Amelia.

Mr. Burke was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Mary Rebecca “Beckie” Funk Burke; a son, Stewart E. “Dudley” Burke Jr.; four brothers, Luther F. Burke, Wilson Burke Jr., William R. “Inky” Burke and Thomas S. Burke; and eight sisters, Mable B. Updike, Jean Ann Johnson, Weltie Kelly, Peggy Sheetz, Nancy Mottley, Susan Fischer, Frances Beckner and Barbara Baer.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 3 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
