It is with great sorrow and hope in the resurrection that we announce that Kevin J. Riedel, 33, tragically passed away from natural causes on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at his residence in Lexington, Virginia.
A funeral Mass will be held for Kevin at 11 A.M. on Friday, February 4, 2022 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 12762 Lee Hwy, Washington, Virginia 22747 with Father Brian Capuano officiating. The burial will take place at St. Peter Cemetery immediately following. A visitation will occur the evening prior to the Mass from 6-8 P.M. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W Main St. Front Royal, Virginia 22630.
Kevin was the beloved son of David J. Sr. and Marie K. Riedel of Washington, Virginia. He is also survived by his grandparents, Bill and Janet Riedel of Norfolk, Virginia, and Frank Koha of Berea, Ohio; his siblings, David (Constance Magnuson), Annelise, Nick and John Riedel; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Kevin was a deeply spiritual person who wove his faith into all that he did. He did this in varied ways: as the campus minister for VMI and W&L, as a seminarian for the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, and through his many friendships. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending time backpacking on trails across the country, as part of a trail crew on the Allegheny Trail, and as a member of a Woodland Fire Crew. He took many opportunities to serve those in need in Appalachia by organizing service trips to the region.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Campus Ministry of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Lexington, Virginia c/o Laura LaClair; or the Diocese of Richmond Seminarian Fund. Both funds are at 7800 Carousel Ln., Richmond VA 23294.

David & Marie — you have my very deepest sympathy from Kevin’s passing from this life here on earth. I was Blessed to get to know Kevin while he was discerning with Glenmary. I lived in Sneedville TN, just a few miles from Jonesville VA where Kevin had organized ASP groups to do service for the poor in the area. I felt so much in solidarity with Kevin in doing outreach and Ecumenical Evangelization. May Kevin rest in God’s peace forever.
Brother Craig — Glenmary Home Missioners
Thank You Br. Craig. This sudden and unexpected loss of Kevin has been very hard, but we suspect it was God’s will. The number of people who have reached out to say that Kevin was a phenomenal person who had a great impact on them has been gratifying.
Thank you, Brother Craig, very much. Kevin had a real heart for the people of Appalachia, and for bringing Christ’s love to those he met.
Dear Riedel Family,
We are so sorry to hear of Kevin’s passing. Our prayers are with you all. We have great peace in knowing that he is with the Lord. We have wonderful memories of Kevin at the CMR Farm Fair in Culpeper, VA in the 2000’s and the various times we ran into him over the years.
His friendship was real & tangible to many and we are grateful to have known him in this lifetime.
I had the honor of working with Kevin on the Allegheny Trail for the last couple years. He was a hard worker, soft spoken, and always willing to help in anyway he could. I had many one on one talks with Kevin and his outlook on life was one of service, and helping however he could. A true gentleman in all respects.
His presence will be sorely missed among our crews along the trail.
God Speed Kevin, keep hiking that extra mile.

David and Marie & family,
I am heartbroken to hear of your loss. I can’t even imagine. Prayers and much love for the weeks and years ahead. ❤️🙏
Nick and family, please know that as Kevin is embraced in God’s loving arms, his memory will continue to be cherished by those of us who knew him, no matter how briefly.
I worked with Kevin at Sky Meadows and saw him at the park after he moved on to VSP’s logistics center in Richmond. His beautiful smile and gentle presence were only a glimpse of the bright sparkling light he held inside. That beautiful Divine light will continue to shine in the lives of those he knew and met along the trail of life.
May it bring you comfort and peace to know that his generosity as a way-shower for those in search of God’s love in this world is not forgotten and continues to inspire the lives of others.
God bless you all with love and light.

Thank you!!!
Our hearts go out to you and the entire family at the sudden death of Kevin. I am speaking for the GALIETTA Family in Pennsylvania who are endeared to David and Constance here in Pennsylvania. We will be making a donation to the Catholic Campus Ministries in Kevin’s name.
It is with great sorrow that I learned of the passing of your son, grandson, and brother. I am a member of Holy Spirit parish in Jonesville, Virginia and was blessed to have met Kevin on the mission trips he organized to our area through the Appalachian Service Project. Kevin was friendly, outgoing, prayerful, and a blessing to know. My prayers, and those of our Catholic community, are with his family and friends during this difficult time. May God be with you as He welcomes Kevin into His loving embrace.
Dear Riedel family. Please accept our deepest condolences for the loss of Kevin. We were privileged to meet and know Kevin while he was in Tennessee in 2019 with the Glenmary family. He taught a Bible study class at Divine Savior Catholic Mission in Celina. We were so impressed with not only his knowledge but his quiet and gentle demeanor. He was a fiercely devoted young man who now rests peacefully in God’s embrace.
My husband and I just heard about Kevin’s passing. Our hearts are broken for you, but sure that he is in Heaven with the angels.
We were Kevin’s roommates in Jackson Hole, and he was like my husbands pastor. They would stay up late talking about God and the Bible, and we still have the bookmark he gave us of the Apostles Creed.
He was so kind and meant so much to us.
We’re praying for strength for your family, and peace during this new chapter of your lives.
With much love
