Evelyn June Fosnight Burke, 90, died on April 5, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Clarence Burnard Fosnight and Eliza Alexander Fosnight. Her husband of 66 years, William Welton Burke, preceded her in death on April 1, 2017.
Mrs. Burke was born December 9, 1926, in Front Royal, Virginia. She was a graduate of Warren County High School and Madison College, where she majored in education and minored in music. Mrs. Burke enjoyed a long career in education, teaching in Front Royal, Rocky Mount, and Arlington before settling on a farm in Madison County with her husband in 1960. She taught kindergarten for many years in the Madison County Public School system, retiring in 1993. She was a long-time member of Culpeper United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. An exceptional teacher and role model, Mrs. Burke’s kindness and positivity endeared her to all who knew her.
Mrs. Burke is survived by her children, William W. Burke, Jr. (Nancy) of Mechanicsville, VA; Ann Burke Anderson (John) of Oxford, NC; and Thomas B. Burke of Culpeper; and two grandchildren, Dixon E. Moretz of New York, NY and Clare B. Moretz of San Diego, CA. She was predeceased by a sister, Sara Ann Fosnight.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, April 10, 2017, at Culpeper United Methodist Church. A private graveside service will be held for the family in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal. Maddox Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
