Hazel J. Brown Cornell, 96, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday April 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home with Sammy Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Rockland Community Cemetery in Warren County.

Mrs. Cornell was born December 14, 1929 in Front Royal, Virginia, daughter of the late Claude and Mary Elizabeth McDonald Brown.

She is survived by three daughters, Ellen Funkhouser and Kathy Goode (Steven), all of Winchester, and Joyce Kenney (David) of Linden; two sisters, Nellie Boggs of Norton and Hattie Hite of Bealeton; three grandchildren, Gary Phelps Jr., Lisa Kenney Maddox (Cort) and Steven Good Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Joshua, Taylor and Braylen; and three great-great-grandchildren, Samson, Weston and Adalynn.

Mrs. Cornell was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Jesse Cleveland Cornell; her wonderful step-mother, Grace Brown; two brothers, Leonard Brown and Preston Brown; and three sisters, Frances Nalls, Virginia Lanham and Celestine Brown.

Pallbearers will be Gary “Junior” Phelps, Steven Good Jr., Cort Maddox, Joshua Parker, David Kenney and Donnie Garrett.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 22 from 6-8 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home.
