Josephine “Jo” Ewell

Josephine Elna Westbrook Ewell passed away peacefully on January 12, 2021 at Hidden Springs Senior Living near Front Royal, Virginia.

Mrs. Ewell was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1927, the daughter of the late Lt. Col. Joseph Albert Westbrook and Hazel Mason Westbrook. She was graduated from the Chicago Public School System, and attended Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, graduating in 1949. With her father in the military, she moved with the family to Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. While there she worked for the International Monetary Fund, and later the National Security Agency. During this period she met her future husband, John F. Ewell, who she married on November 22nd, 1952. John and Jo moved to Front Royal in 1955, where they spent the remainder of their lives.

She is survived by her children; John F. Ewell, Jr. (Sharon); Ellen Ewell Innes (Jeff); and her daughter in law Terry Ewell. She is also survived by grandchildren, Lauren Ewell Nelson (Matt), Thomas Ewell; and Ashley Haines (Steve); great grandchildren Ben Nelson; Landon Haines; and Dawson Haines; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John F. Ewell; her son Douglas W. Ewell; her sister, Betty Lou Westbrook Monroe; and her brother-in-law, David L. Monroe.

A private funeral service will be held on at Calvary Episcopal Church in Front Royal. After cremation, inurnment will be at the Memorial Garden at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Warren County, Calvary Episcopal Church, or a charity of your choice.

    My deepest sympathy. Jo was one of the first people I met when I moved to Front Royal and joined Calvary. She made feel so welcome. I was fortunate to be on her team in the the Alter Guild. She was a wonderful person!
