Winfield Butler, Jr.

Winfield Butler, Jr., 76, of Bentonville, Virginia passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018 at his home.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 11 AM at Limeton United Methodist Church, 9 Limeton Main St, Bentonville, VA 22610.

Winfield was born on August 17, 1941 in Olney, Maryland to the late Winfield Butler and Lena May Grimsley Butler. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Butler.

He was a 1961 graduate of John S. Mosby Academy and retired after 22 years from IGA Foodliner. From the age of nine he began collecting baseball cards and was a lifelong avid Yankees fan. As a young man Winfield played in the Front Royal Men’s Softball League. He was a pitcher for the Blue Barons. He also collected coins, comics and record albums, especially Elvis albums. He attended Limeton United Methodist Church without missing a Sunday for over 30 years. He took immaculate care of the church grounds. The church was central to his life. Winfield had four important women in his life. He looked forward to meeting his mother, Lena May Butler, in heaven. He was forever grateful to his maternal grandmother, Sally Wintz Grimsley Putnam who raised him, his aunt, Pearl Henry who nurtured him and he leaves behind his aunt, Etta Nossett who for years was his personal taxi.

Survivors include his siblings, Gary Butler, Jackie Butler, Donald Butler, Richard Butler and Rosemary Butler; aunt, Etta Nossett and many cousins.

The family wishes to express their thanks to his special friends, Emerson Rudacille, David and Sue McIntosh, Junior Woodell and his Limeton Church Family.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105.
