Margot Jerike Glavis, 109, of Front Royal, Virginia passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at Hidden Springs Senior Living in Bentonville, Virginia.
Born July 4, 1906 in Berlin, Germany, she graduated from the University of Munich and immigrated in 1934 to the United States on a teaching fellowship at Wellesley College, Massachusetts. She later taught at Madeira Finishing School in Great Falls, Virginia.
She was married to Edward Sumner Glavis who died in 1939.
Conversant in five languages, she worked in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Following the war she transferred to the Department of State in Washington, DC, as a Research Analyst, retiring in 1976 with 35 years of Federal Service.
In retirement she continued her foreign policy interests and Military Defense pursuits by translating documents for various government agency contractors for another ten years. She was a dedicated volunteer in various local civic organizations and deeply proud of her long service to our country.
Mrs. Glavis was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church in Washington, DC. As a member of that choir, she participated in musical performances at the National Gallery of Art and the National Symphony Orchestra.
In 2004 Mrs. Glavis moved to Front Royal to be close to her son George O. Glavis and family. Other survivors include her daughter Margot A. Lyddane of Reston, Virginia, and her family.
Funeral services and burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
